“I like mysteries. I love watching Agatha Christie or Stephen King on Netflix.”
Spotlight on JoAnn Schoss, Seniors In Place Office Administrator
What is your role at Seniors In Place?
One of my main jobs is to answer the phone, so I’m usually the first ear or voice that callers meet. I feel like I’m their first step in the process of finding a caregiver. People calling in have lots owf questions. I empathize with that. I can’t always answer their questions but I can find somebody who can.
What’s it like working at Seniors In Place?
It’s a busy staff so we really work together as a team. I wasn’t sure if I would like working in a family business. But I do appreciate the way I was welcomed into the company and how people acknowledge what I do. I really like everybody here.
Do you feel a connection to the Seniors In Place mission?
Definitely. I had to find services for my parents and mother-in-law who was in a facility, so I have a good understanding of where callers are coming from. It takes a lot of trust to bring a caregiver into your home. I understand that and I try to be compassionate. When people call asking for help I can put myself in their place because I had to do it.
What is the one contribution you’ve made to the company that you’re particularly proud of?
When I first started, all caregiver documents were in paper files. That meant, that when a facility called for caregivers, I had to copy all the documents and send them over as hard copies. It was surprisingly time consuming. I had the idea to transfer all the documents into our main computer system so that each caregiver has an individual digital page. It took several months, but the result is that now the system is streamlined and everybody who needs it has access. Everybody’s life is easier and the process is smoother, quicker, more secure. It might seem like a small thing, but it had a big result. I’m proud of my part in it.
Do you feel you have pretty good work/life balance?
I work longer days now. I used to be a social worker in a school so my hours were 8-3. I’m still getting used to that.
What’s a fun fact about you that people don’t know about you?
I’m great with a glue gun. I can fix pretty much anything or do any arts and crafts with a glue gun.
